Documentary 'The Evolution of Linux' goes Open Source http://blur.cx has GPLed footage and stories online - "I need your help." - GPLed clips from Rob Malda of Slashdot and Richard Stallman of GNU available for download - "I'm trying to do an interview here and your showing me this ass!" December 23, Eugene, OR-- Independent film-maker Curtis Lee Fulton announced today that he was going to release his current project, _The_Evolution_of_Linux," under the terms of the General Public License. "If you understand even a little about GNU/Linux and own a digital video camera," said Fulton, "I need your help." To facilitate the Open Source process, Fulton has assembled a web site that allows people to download content, post stories and offer feedback. Currently, footage from a recent Richard Stallman interview and a Rob Malda interview are online. Stallman introduces the basics of free software while Malda talks about the Internet age of Journalism, until he his interrupted by a lewd gesture. "I'm trying to do an interview here," says Malda in the clip, "and you're showing me this ass!" The site can be found at http://blur.cx. "I got the idea from conversations I've had with Richard Stallman," said Fulton, "But obviously I was already inspired by the idea of Copyleft, or else I wouldn't be directing a documentary about the philosophy of free information." Fulton said that as he studied the phenomena of GNU/Linux and the ideas of Open Source he realized the GPL would be the "cheapest, fastest and most effective" mechanism for getting the project finished and "into the hands" of his audience. _The_Evolution_of_Linux is an independent documentary that explores the phenomena of free information and its political, social and economic repercussions. The documentary will use Linux as a metaphor to explore the growing power of the working class due to free information and free tools such as Linux. "The story I'm trying to tell," said Fulton, "is not the story of Linux, but a story via Linux. But in order to do that, I have to explain in non-technical terms what Linux is. I can't overlook the details. Stuff like what a kernel is, what a compiler is and the Origin of these components are important details to the bigger story, which is about global cooperation and resistance. Think of this documentary as _Pi crossed with _Hearts_and_Minds." Due to the enormous amount of space uncompressed footage demands, the web site will not be able to offer uncut content. "Uncompressed digital video," said Fulton, "the kind that people need if they want to use it in a production of their own, requires gigabytes of space, even for just 60 seconds of footage." As a result "anyone who wants to trade high-quality content must use snail mail," said Fulton. Fulton said that the site will be used as a "common place for people to exchange ideas or publish footage they already have in compressed, downloadable form."
